Awake with Jessica Alba

The first trailer of Jessica Alba in the upcoming Weinstein Co. thriller, Awake has been released. The film will tell the story of a man (Hayden Christensen) undergoing heart surgery while experiencing a phenomenon called “anesthetic awareness,” which leaves him awake but paralyzed throughout the operation. As various obstacles present themselves, his wife (Alba) must make life-altering decisions while wrestling with her own personal drama.

By the looks of the trailer, these two Hollywood young stars are living up to producer Joana Vicente’s expectations, who told Variety that “Awake” “will do to surgery what ‘Jaws’ did to swimming in the ocean.”

““Awake” “will do to surgery what ‘Jaws’ did to swimming in the ocean.””

So the director wants people to be scared to go into the ER? Man, if that’s the case, I wonder if there will be a surge in litigation against doctors (even more so than now).

The trailer was REALLY great. From what happened in the trailer, it can also happen in real life, I mean, if you the doctor fails the operation purposely, he is basically getting away with murder, and is getting paid for it. So basically is the director’s purpose in making this film to make people aware of the possibilites and situations revolving operations? Or was the idea just perfect for a movie? After watching this trailer, I honestly would avoid major operations at all costs. I have a surgery in January for wisdom teeth extraction and I was told that I’m going to use anesthetics, hope im not that 1 in 700 who remain awake.

    Okay.

What the hell? This is clearly another one of those Hollywood type thrillers that has very little realistic value. I’m not going to complain, because I REALLY like Jessica Alba, but having a background in health sciences really makes this difficult.

I suppose, that because this is a personal POV, it has the potential to be…kinda…true…? But honestly let’s just look at this realistically. The base rate for anesthetic awareness is 0.1-0.2%…at best in the United States. In 2004, the number of open heart surgeries was 640 000 (in the U.S.). Let’s see, the math leads to 640 cases per year. We are not taking into account that an anesthetist will be present whose job is to MONITOR for signs of incomplete anesthesia on the anesthesia continuum index, nor is it taking into account that a surgeon and staff are likely going to notice activity related to conscious states. Okay, so factoring that out, the majority of cases are partial consciousness, there is HARDLY ever holistic consciousness.

So seriously? Sure it’s gotta be devastating for those that have it happen, and I sure as hell wouldn’t wish that on anyone, but the likelihood that all these medical professionals are going to incorrectly administer a dose of analgesic that will be sufficient to induce loss of consciousness and holistic muscle paralysis, AND be completely oblivious to not monitor for the many MANY signs of consciousness, AND the anesthetist whose job is to MAKE SURE you’re completely under and STAY UNDER?

    Pretty damn rare.

Allan, I’m pretty sure you don’t really need to worry about your wisdom teeth extraction. They don’t completely put you to sleep anyways, it’s usually just to deaden nerves (local anesthetic). I’m actually hoping that you DO remain awake because if you don’t, you should probably think about getting a new oral surgeon/dentist.

Other than that, YAYAYAYAYA JESSICA ALBA!

oh yeah, i forgot to mention they usually use a combination of analgesics. a common one is ketamine-diazepam-NO2, which pretty much is a relaxant, an anxiolytic and laughing gas altogether. it’ll put you to sleep and you shouldn’t feel shit.

It’s good to see a role that we can actually take Jessica Alba seriously in.

Her last film bombed at the box office, I hope it isn’t the same for her again for this particular movie. The casting could be better. Hayden Christensen’s performance during the star wars series wasn’t spectacular as his other co-stars, at least they casted an academy nominated actor Terrance Howard.

I can second that Yume. :)

That actually looks Ok. When I was reading the short write up, I thought meh, but actually watching the trailer and seeing the full overview of the film makes it more interesting.

Thanks for sharing this Terry, going to have to put this one on my ‘movie list’ :)

i’m not sure if i can really see jessica alba playing a serious role as someone other than a fictional character or accident-prone comedian. i mean, don’t get me wrong, she’s beautiful! i’m just not really sure if her acting skills are that great =T

seeing hayden in a big role again is definitely great though. he’s so underrated!!

jbkmo, just my .02, from the trailer the mother says something about the doctor being second rate and from the looks of it they dont really have the guys best interest in mind. i mean they are going to purposely kill him afterall. i dont think they would worry about giving him all the proper doses.

anyways, the movie looks really interesting.
