Today was the launch of the Fall 2006 CSS Reboot. The best web standards designers usually come out to partcipate in the CSS Reboot, but the quality of submissions for this round definitely fell a notch. The decline in partcipation may have resulted from programming issues that the new CSS Reboot owner didn”t get sorted out until the last minute. Promotions, timely updates, and lack of communication with participants also hurt the buzz that usually surrounds this grand event.
As a result of the uncertainty CSS Reboot launch, the Standards Reboot was developed a couple of weeks ago as a great backup. Hopefully the two owners can work together to create a more organized event the next time around.
Nonetheless, there were some notable reboots and here’s my list of the best! If there’s a great reboot that you think I missed, please let me know.

Yes these designs are very nice. Terry how did you start getting into CSS design, and how long have you been doing it for?

I’ve been web designing for about 10 years now, and started designing using CSS and standards just couple of years ago.
I’m a huge fan of seperating content from design, and creating code that’s compliant in all browsers.

Nice article, I hadn’t heard of Standards Reboot. I’ll have to sign up for that one too!
Thanks for checking out my redesign, it’s nice to know that people are looking! It’s just a shame I didn’t make your list!
I love the new 45Royale design, it’s so clean and effective. It’s obviously been designed by someone with plenty of experience and an eye (or two) for good design.
Personally, I think Jonathan Snook’s newest design is a step back from the last one. I like this new one, but much prefered his Spring Reboot submission. Because our names start with the same three letters my Spring 06 entry was right next to his. The difference in interest between the two was laughable!
He’s a great designer, but I’ve seen better from him.
BTW: I really love this design too. Is this a reboot? If so, let me know the reboot address so I can vote for it by commenting :)
Thanks again!

Nice selection, Kineda.
Agree with your selection.
But I wonder, why there is so many reboot blog/site didnt follow the web standard. Even cannot pass the validation. Is this what we called rebooting web standard design? -

For those wondering, I did enter Kineda into the reboot!

Thanks for including my site in the list. :)
Jonic: One thing I’ve learned is that it’s impossible to please everybody. Personally, I liked the last design, too, but certain types of content (like code examples or short posts) didn’t really work well in the overall design. There’s tradeoffs in every design and hopefully I’ve struck enough of a balance that the content has become the focal point, and not the design itself.

CSS is key now for any web page design right now. Thanks for this, will use it for inspiration and to better my skills.

Hey Terry,
Wow… top of your list - you cant imagine how proud that makes me!
Both Ubersuper and 45Royale were favs of mine also.
As far as Snooks redesign is concerned, I think the problem (if thats what you’d call it) is that it fails to reach the heights of his previous reboot. But its still a nice design nonetheless.
And, of course, your own site would be on my list but I guess modesty prevents you from having it on yours, eh?

Jonathan: Ain’t it the truth.
Please don’t get me wrong, I really like you new design, but I’ve always considered you to be a leader in making people really see what is possible with blog design. I think I might have been expecting more more more from this reboot, but if your intention with this reboot was to draw attention away from the design and toward the content then you’ve nailed it.
I guess I was looking at your reboot with the wrong set of expectations about me. Now that I know what the focus was this time I understand the choices you made with your design. I thought that you were maybe heading in the same direction as your last reboot and the design before that.
I’m all to aware that focusing on the content is the key ingredient to blog design, beause otherwise what would be the point in writing a blog?
I’m surprised I didn’t spot your intention earlier, seeing as though I too opted to really throw the content front and center on my reboot. This is the first time I’ve gone single column, and I’m glad I did. Maybe my own reboot has skewed my perception of what ‘design as lens for content’ actually entails.
Thanks for setting me straight :)

Wonderful list. I think Snook did a rather good job of making things easy to read for the visitor. I’m a fan of clean designs and he’s hit the nail on the head with the latest reboot.
Jonic - I’m not a huge fan of one-column designs, but your site seems to pull it off well. I usually think that screen real estate should be maximized as much as possible. Scrolling downwards too far gets rather annoying and confusing. Great reboot though!

Pinged by StevenBao.com » Blog Archive » CSSReboot: The Best Reboots
[...] Every year CSSReboot gets better. This year was not an outlier. Nevertheless I feel that this Reboot did not improve as much as the previous one, which was totally kick-A. Let’s hope for a better reboot next time. Why hadn’t this Reboot been as awesome? Technical difficulties. I have kept communication with the CSSReboot guy and there were many technical difficulties this time around, but he says that the next Reboot will be better since he will be ready (code built, I suppose) and there will be better reboots next time. (Update: Terry speculates that “The decline in partcipation may have resulted from programming issues that the new CSS Reboot owner didn’’t get sorted out until the last minute.”) [...]

Pinged by The Otaku Chronicles » A Late Thank You.
[...] The respond to this website’s new design was well above my expectation. To my delight, the new design was received positively and was featured at a number of websites that I respect and subscribe to, like Kineda , Cameron Moll and Inspiration King. There have also been a noticeable increase to the number of visitors and subscribers to the feed. Here I would like to thank everyone who have linked to Otaku Chronicles, all the visitors and of course a special thank you to the subscribers of the feed. If I have a lot of money I’d buy all of you something but unfortunately I’m just a student so this is all that I can offer. [...]
