Hong Kong entertainer Edison Chen said on Thursday he was quitting show business indefinitely after admitting here that he had taken the photos embarrassing several well-known starlets that had been leaked to the Internet.
The 27-year-old Canadian-born Chinese said he had come back to Hong Kong to “account for himself and to apologize to those involved in or effected by the scandal”.
“I would like to apologize to all the ladies involved in the scandal and their families for all their sufferings. I am sorry,” the Vancouver native said at a press conference attended by hundreds of media.
It’s amazing how Hong Kong and America differ in regards to sex scandals. In Hong Kong, you lose all face and star power. In America, you instantly become a mega superstar like Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian.
So how did they get the pics? According to Sing Pao (translated):
According to an informed source close to the person who was the source of the photographs, several months ago Edison Chen sent his pink Apple Powerbook laptop to a Central computer shop for repairs. The technician made the accidental discovery that there were several hundred photographs and videos of Edison Chen and/pr more than a dozen celebrities/artistes (many of whom were listed by the media and netizens as prime suspects after the first photographs of Gillian Chung, Bobo Chan and Cecilia Cheung appeared), and he downloaded them onto his own computer.
The informed source said that the technician only intended to keep the material for his own enjoyment. Then one day he invited some friends over to his Ma On Shan apartment to play mahjong and he casually mentioned that he had some “good” stuff to show them. When his friends saw the material, they were astonished and lobbied him to post to the Internet. He did not want to do so himself, because he knew that Edison Chen has his contact information. So finally a female friend agreed to undertake the task of posting onto the Internet. That was how it happened.

What a way to ruin your reputation, that being said, if anyone would to take their computer to Future Shop or Best Buy, better be careful, because they would do the same thing to you too. Always get a friend to fix your computer. :)

First of all, he can’t suffer the entire blame. He wasn’t the one who leaked it, but he should have been more protective of the private files. I mean, having sex is a natural thing, by all means, DO IT! But when you keep photos as memories, you should always been more considerate about the people who are invovled, and should have secured those files. Now that the photos have been leaked, marriages are breaking up and reputations and quality of life have changed for the victims. And for the one who leaked it….basically played god in this situation, and by exposing the ladies.. he’s ruined many lives.

i really feel bad for edison i actually liked some of his movies in a weird way but he didnt look like so bad of a guy. i’ve seen the photo’s and looked at comments people made on it like “yea that fucker deserves to be embarrassed” and all these other things and im just wondering why people hate him so much and don’t care about his and the other people’s feelings that are involved in it. how would they like it if someone leaked out their private photo’s to the world? so he has a sex…doesn’t everyone? he just happen to take photo’s…why i don’t know, but that’s his business. it shoulda been left alone. all in all, i just felt like expressing how i feel about this whole situation he’s in
Aww. Poor guy. I mean a simple mistake it turning ruining his life. Those people that released the photos should really be hating themselves right now. Karma will come around and bite them in the ass.

He should have known better….I don’t feel sorry for him, I feel more concerned for the female celebrities since Asian society in general are harsher on them when it comes to things like these. Fortunately, it hasn’t been the case this time….

I agree with rocketfuel. Yeah, it sucks that he’s leaving the Hong Kong entertainment industry for now, but he still has a fashion business and a multimedia production studio he operates so he still has options without breaking his claim. The people that got hurt the most are the girls, who had many contracts with companies being dropped due to the scandal and three marriages destroyed.
Also sucks that he didn’t present his apology speech in Cantonese in Hong Kong since he was criticized for not doing so when he first gave his first statement when the scandal first broke out.
Poor guy. This tragedy is probably going to haunt him for the rest of his life now. People are just so evil. :(

yea he was…too bad he’s retiring. I dont think that the incident was that bad, i mean there were much more scandalous, i mean they are teens, you cant expect them to be perfect right? and he is not the only one to blame…
