Nintendo has released an update to their popular DS Lite, named the Nintendo DSi ($180). The DSi has two 3.25-inch screens (17% large than the DS Lite), audio enhancements, a built-in web browser, a SD memory card slot, and a 3.3 megapixel camera (640×480) on the outside and a smaller one inside on the hinge.
The DSi, which comes in white or black, will also have the ability to download games over Wi-Fi. It hits stores in Japan next month, but won’t be available here until sometime early next year.
Not a big enough difference to really upgrade to the new DSi.
My brother and I were thinking of getting a DS one, disappointed with the DSi, is this the 2nd generation of the DS? if so, I’ll probably chip in to get a 2nd generation PSP if thats any good.
Same processer as the first I think but just a few new features. I rather get a PSP.
PSP lacks games! Overall, it’s better than the DS in terms of.. graphics and performance. The Psp is a portable media station, the DS… well… some games are addictive. Plus its cheaper to mod a PSP, you can do it yourself, no hardware required.
simply put: DS> more interactive (there’s a lot of styles of playing.. dragging with pen, poking… blowing into the mic, and just the normal style)
PSP> just buttons.
Anywho, this DS has a camera, it’d be awesome if it was used in games… like scavenger hunt or something, that’d be such a cool game, it’s such a good idea, I should start working on developing it hahaahah.
i dont know nintendo cuz in europe it is not avaliable, but dont you need a keyboard when you want to browse web?
Yep, DS is a good gaming platform (I love the Prof. Layton series). But PSP is definately more impressive as a far as graphics, and using other media is concerned.

I’m surprised that the DSi is so similar to the DS/Lite. Developers that have spent time to support the GBA slot, rumble, or just the basic DS hardware limitations are shat on because Nintendo decided to reveal a DS 1.2, which changes the formula.
Much like Apple who routinely unveils a new iPod that changes the accessory contacts and screws over accessory manufacturers.
Yes, the new DS can play DS software, so for consumers, it’s just another product to purchase. But for the devs, this is rather bitter sweet. For new games that have been in development before this announcement, they’ll be criticized for not utilizing the new hardware or in many cases, tack it on to jump in with the fad.
Personally, I think a hardware revision should have maintained all the functionality of the predecessors but more streamlined, not removing and replacing hardware. They might as well just name the unit something else entirely so it won’t conflict with the current DS line.

Just like pdas and the iPhone, the DS uses a virtual keyboard on the touch screen where you can tap on the letters.
If the American dollar actually costed something instead of just the cost of the paper and ink to make it, then they probably would have marketed it without the wait.
