Are you a high level executive that doesn’t have enough time to hit the gym? No worries. Now you can burn calories while surfing the web with the Steelcase Walkstation ($6500). This standing height desk is hooked up to a treadmill, combining work with exercise for the ultimate in multi-tasking.

Hmm, I saw this earlier, but I honestly think it’s anything BUT practical. This treadmil has a walking speed, but when you actually walk, your hand movements will not be steady, so using the mouse and typing would also be a problem. Another problem is… what if I wanted to sit down? Is will i have to remove the treadmill?, if so, where can i put it. At first glance, the Steelcase Walkstation may seem like a very healthy computer option, but for $6500, I think I’d rather just go for a swim in an indoor pool, or job for 10 minutes after work, or before work in the morning. Fresh air is very important during excersises, if your excercising in your office, the air isn’t as fresh, its contained air. I would find a bit of time to go out for a job instead of wasting $6500 on this set-up. Just my 2 cents.

I hope you’re not doing any design work that requires pixel perfect selections! :)

I think the computer would be more of a distraction than anything. If you get tired you’ll tend to lose focus on your work. If you’re really concentrated on your work you might slow down and not get the full exercise you need. That’s just my opinion, but I wouldn’t waste money on that.

i agree with most of the previous posts. honestly, how lowly has mankind become to have a need to exercise during a business situation? i understand the practicality of such an invention, but at the same time, this combination of a treadmill and a desk is highly recruited as a naive idea.

um, but the 6500 dollar pricing is a little out of range. a regular treadmill is about 400, a desk is about 400, and a comp even at a good price is about 1-2000 dollars. +since its a walkstation…how much exercise could you achieve…
basically..i think this idea is a complete waste of parts and time. if someone were to buy it, they would probably be only using it minimally if any at all..i mean..you cant do any real work while running/walking..

Agreed with most people. How is anyone able to focus on their work while running? Work and working out should be two mutually exclusive events that should never come together…unless of course your work is as an Olympic athlete or whatever.
In addition to wasting precious attentional processes, this has to be terrible for your eyes. It’s bad to read in the car because your ciliary muscles have to adjust so much and so often, and it must be hell for your visual system to have to correct for the parallax of your walk, not to mention squint to adjust to the projections of your monitor.
It’s just, frankly, a huge waste of time and money. With $6500, go on a mini-vacation, get away and go for a run along the beach someplace foreign. Do work with your work time and focus on it, and when you’re on holiday play hard. No sense in combining the two and making both suffer.

I like the idea, but they would have a lot of tweaking to do with it. First of all they should have a touch screen instead of a key board - something like this ( http://youtube.com/watch?v=g8pxDvuSnQQ )- , to make up for the lack of steadiness, and they should make a separate desk space for sitting and not centralize the the computer system. Or you could just but a treadmill and put it in your office and get a young and eager(desperate to get to the top) intern to read you the daily report cause i would rather spend $6500 on a personal “slave” then on this, but thats just me.

It may not be the most practical idea out there, but hey.. let’s give them credit for trying to increase physical activity in the lives of such a large group of people who are at risk for living sedentary lifestyles. The concept may not be the smartest one out there, I agree, but despite that, it got your attention didn’t it? Take it as an PSA at the least: They’re bringing awareness to a population that has increasing rates of obesity. I commend them for that. Plus, with a few tweaks, this walkstation could probably double as a regular workstation as well. LOL!
