The ground-breaking Nikon COOLPIX S1000pj ($430) is expected to shake up the compact digital camera market as people begin to see the benefits of sharing and viewing photos and videos using personal projection.
Rarely is there a camera released that makes me fall in love with photography all over again. But the Olympus E-P1 ($749) does just that. It’s not a point and shoot and it’s not an SLR. It’s a PEN. The first-generation Olympus PEN appeared in 1959 and led the way to high-quality images in a small package, matching SLR cameras’ performance of the era.

Today, Olympus utilized its miniaturizing and engineering expertise to create a slimmer body, removing the optical viewfinder and mirror box found inside a traditional DSLR, to create a small but high-quality interchangeable lens camera. By reducing its lens mount diameter, Olympus also enabled the production of smaller and lighter lenses to match the E-P1’s body size.

The new camera’s high-end, stainless-steel body is easy to handle and carry, and has the styling and refinement of a precision watch. Its retro-chic look turns heads, from tech aficionados and camera buffs to the fashion-conscious and everyday point-and-shooter. Built to be solid, it fits comfortably in a jacket pocket or a handbag for a night on the town, or to take on any spontaneous adventure. The E-P1 lets you do more and go more places while capturing your life, thanks to its compact size – 4.75″(W) x 2.75″ (H) x 1.43″ (D) – and light 11.8-ounce body. Attention to detail is visible in every aspect of the camera’s retro-style metal body design, available in either silver or white with accompanying new small and lightweight Olympus M. ZUIKO Micro Four Thirds lenses: 14-42mm f3.5-5.6 (28-84mm equivalent) and 17mm f2.8 (34mm equivalent).

The Olympus E-P1 will be available in July 2009. DPreview has a nice preview of the camera.

It’s been a hectic month for Canon digital SLR fans. Rumors have been rumors up until an hour ago when Canon finally unveiled the EOS 5D successor. The Canon EOS 5D Mark II ($2,699 U.S.) boasts an impressive new 21MP CMOS sensor, an expanded ISO range of 50-25,600 and a wealth of improvements and new features including full 1080p HD movie recording, live view, 3.0″ 920k dot LCD, DIGIC IV processor, increased battery capacity and sensor dust reduction.

Along with the revealing of the new 5D Mark II is a lens to match the new full frame sensor. The Canon 24mm f/1.4 L II USM lens ($1,699 U.S) is the latest addition to the EF lens family. A wide angle prime that has undergone a complete redesign and now features 13 elements in 10 groups.

So for those that haven’t made the jump to full frame digital SLR’s yet, begs the question — Canon 5D MKII or Nikon D700? I know I’ll be selling my recently purchased Canon 5D for one of these new bad boys.

The blogosphere is buzzing this morning about the release of Canon’s EOS 50D, the successor to Canon’s ESO 40D prosumer model.
But where is the successor to Canon’s popular full frame 5D? Although a fine camera considering it’s 3 years old now, the Canon 5D is being seriously trumped in the feature department by Nikon’s recently released D700.

A couple weeks ago I mentioned a rumor that Nikon would be releasing a new full frame DSLR. That rumor is now true. Nikon announced the release of the D700 ($2,999) today — the company’s newest pro-level digital SLR camera.

Falling between the Nikon D3 and D300, the D700 features a 12.1-effective megapixel Nikon FX-format sensor and a native ISO range of 200 to 6400. The camera also features a 3-inch super-density 920,000-dot VGA color screen, Nikon’s EXPEED Image Processing System, Nikon’s 51-point auto focus system, two Live View shooting modes, a Scene Recognition System, and a new active dust reduction system.

Full frame without the D3 weight. What more could you ask for?
