An article in the Hong Kong Oriental Daily has given birth to what may be the dream of all martial arts film lovers, the uniting of Jet Li and jackie Chan on one screen. Although Chan and Li are two of the three biggest stars in Hong Kong film history (third being Chow Yun-Fat), they have never starred in a film together.

The cinematic dreamteam would be headed by director Zhang Yimou of “House of Flying Daggers” and “Raise the Red Lattern” fame. The movie known only as, “The J & J Project”, will be announced officially at the Cannes Film Festival. It’s been rumored before, can it finally be true? Let’s hope so, before they get too old to perform their wushu mastery.

The Global Chinese Kung Fu Star TV Competition kicked off here Thursday expecting to select a new icon of the Chinese kung fu after Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan and Jet Li. The competition is cosponsored by China’s youngest star TV channel Shenzhen star TV and the 1500-year-old Shaolin Temple, regarded as the cradle of the Chinese kung fu. The six-month activity will be held in six domestic competitionzones including Shenzhen, Beijing, Zhengzhou, Shenyang, Chengdu and Shanghai.

At the same time the organizing committee also established five international competition zones in the United States, Germany, Russia, Italy and Australia, said Wang Maoliang, president of Shenzhen Radio, Film and Television Group, stressing that this shows the selection is open to every one in the world who favors the kung fu.

Shi Yongxin, abbot of the Shaolin Temple, said one of the most important goals of the competition is to showcase Chinese kung fu culture and he said it is also a good attempt to develop this cultural legacy and promote it to the world.

The winner of the competition will have chances to play roles in a number of TV series concerning Shaolin Temple and is also possible to take part in a Hollywood movie with the same theme.

Kung fu is a precious piece of legacy in the 5000-year history of China.

In the past, kung fu was usually used to fight the enemies and safeguard the country.

Yet in the peaceful years today, the Chinese kung fu, instead of fading away with the time, has gained great fames in the international movie circle.

I’ve been waiting all my life for Jackie Chan and Jet Li to battle it out on the big screen. Both aren’t getting any younger. Jet Li is 42yrs old and Jackie Chan is 51yrs old. It looks there might be a chance before the two of them retire. In a recent inteview, director Zhang Yimou’s partner producer Zhang Weiping stated they were working on a new project with Jackie Chan and would ask Jet Li to join the cast as well.

The film would definately not be comedy based. Jackie is pretty excited about the project but awaits to hear what Jet’s thoughts are. Jet Li has stated recently that “Fearless” would be his last martial arts movie project, unless there’s an exceptional script in the making. The two of them have mentioned time and time again in the media that they would love to work on a project together. Lets keep our fingers crossed.

Jet Li has annouced that the official U.S. movie name for his Huo Yuanjia Biopic will be Fearless. Somewhat loosely based on the life story of Chinese martial art master Huo Yuanjia (1869-1910), the film tells how an arrogant young street fighter becomes a symbol of patriotism. Jet Li has said this film would be a conclusion for all his martial art films, and unless for a project really good, he would stop making any more martial art film.

This week, martial arts star Jet Li began shooting his latest movie, a biopic of legendary martial arts master and Chinese patriot Huo Yuanjia (1869-1910) that is being directed by Ronny Yu (Freddy vs. Jason, The Bride with White Hair).

In a recent Q&A session on his official site, Jet Li explained his intent. “I hope to use this film and character to let people understand what is really important and dear to my heart. I also want to explain once and for all the meaning of wushu and kungfu.”

Li joined a Hollywood production crew in Shanghai on Sunday to begin the shoot. Columbia Pictures has invested about US$19 million into the officially unnamed project.

Li is playing Huo Yuanjia (Fok Yuanjia), son of a martial arts champion who dreams of following in his father’s footsteps. After becoming the most famous fighter in China, he disappears for years when personal tragedy strikes. Ultimately, he must come out of hiding to defend the honor of his country in an international tournament.

Chinese actress Sun Li is playing a blind woman who falls in love with Huo Yuanjia.

Martial arts movie master Yuen Wo-ping, whose recent action choreography can be seen in Kung Fu Hustle and House of Fury, joined the production as action director. Bill Kong (House of Flying Daggers, Hero) is producing.
