The ground-breaking Nikon COOLPIX S1000pj ($430) is expected to shake up the compact digital camera market as people begin to see the benefits of sharing and viewing photos and videos using personal projection. The COOLPIX S1000pj doesn’t just pack a punch with its projector – the compact camera delivers high resolution images with 12.1 effective megapixels and a 2.7” wide viewing-angle TFT LCD monitor. With a high ISO 6400 sensitivity and using Nikon’s exclusive image processing concept, EXPEED, the camera offers the kind of high quality images you expect from Nikon. This is all wrapped up in a sleek aluminium silver or anodized black casing that contains a wide-angle 5x zoom NIKKOR lens.

Here’s guerrilla marketing at it’s best. Taking a cue from our celebrity-obsessed culture, Nikon created a life-like billboard filled with life-like images of paparazzi for the launch of the D700 in Korea. As a potential consumer passes by, the billboard springs to life with multiple flashes light, giving them a feeling of being a true celebrity. Ad placement was also well thought out. The pathway of the red carpet they are walking on leads them right into a store near the Seoul subway station, where they can purchase the Nikon D700. Simply brilliant!

With a few tweaks of Nikon’s SDK, it seems likes HD video might not be too far fetched after all. Take a look at the sample videos below. Although not quite HD yet, I’m sure the Nikon hackers will figure it out soon enough.

A couple weeks ago I mentioned a rumor that Nikon would be releasing a new full frame DSLR. That rumor is now true. Nikon announced the release of the D700 ($2,999) today — the company’s newest pro-level digital SLR camera.

Falling between the Nikon D3 and D300, the D700 features a 12.1-effective megapixel Nikon FX-format sensor and a native ISO range of 200 to 6400. The camera also features a 3-inch super-density 920,000-dot VGA color screen, Nikon’s EXPEED Image Processing System, Nikon’s 51-point auto focus system, two Live View shooting modes, a Scene Recognition System, and a new active dust reduction system.

Full frame without the D3 weight. What more could you ask for?

Be sure to check out the full hands-on preview of the D700 at Digital Photography Review.

Rumors are flying around the photography blogs this morning about the release of the supposed Nikon D700 Full Frame DSLR. Features and specs from the leaked promotional material show a striking similarity to the flagship Nikon D3, but in a smaller and cheaper package ($2999). If this turns out to be true, the three-year-old Canon 5D will finally have a direct competitor on it’s hands.

Nikon has today announced an upgraded version of the D70, the new D70s. This camera has the same CCD sensor and imaging pipeline as the D70 so image quality should be identical. However several changes have been introduced including improved auto focus accuracy, slightly wider flash coverage, a higher capacity battery, a new larger 2.0″ LCD monitor and re-designed menus. The D70s Kit (including the 18-70 mm lens) will cost around $1199, while the body only will be $899, expected to ship in early May.

The best part of it is that current D70 owners aren’t left out to dry. Nikon has also announced that a firmware upgrade due to be issued in mid-May will bring several new D70s features to the D70. It’s refreshing to see a manufacturer not leaving existing owners stranded, although clearly there are some D70s improvements which can’t be introduced with firmware (such as the larger 2.0″ LCD monitor). Primary improvements include new menu design and improved auto focus performance, especially in motion tracking.
