Won My First Street Fighter IV Tourney

I dropped by a small SFIV tournament in Sacramento this weekend at Metropolis Comics off of Bruceville Rd. Wasn’t planning on winning, but I ended up making it to the Grand Finals where I had to play against Romeo’s Balrog for 1st place. Won a hundred bucks and met a friendly bunch of the local Sac players, who were great fun to talk to and play with. Videos by Diangelo of the finals are below, and Antany also took some nice pics of the event. Hope to see everyone at NorCal Regionals next month!

TE Stick Bamboo Cover

Last week, I showed you a few pics of the my newly designed custom TE stick covers. I’m now testing to ensure fitment and quality of finish. If you take a closer look, you’ll notice that none of the edges of the bamboo cover are raw. They are completely finished to provide a nice blend into the TE stick panels.

Justin Wong Wins SFIV National Tournament and Daigo Wins International Title

Gamestop SFIV National Tournament

It was pure pandemonium at the GameStop Street Fighter IV National Tournament finals tonight! Thousands of SF fans flooded Fort Mason Festival Pavilion in San Francisco to watch the best of the best fight for the title of top Street Fighter player in the country. After a series of GameStop tournaments the past few months, it came down to 16 very talented players, but only one could win.

Justin Wong
(Justin Wong – SFIV National Tournament Winner)

The journey to the top definitely wasn’t easy. Littered through the list of finalists were legendary adversaries like Mike Ross (E.Honda), Antawn Ortiz (Balrog) and Jason “A-Dhalsim” Cole (Balrog). Matches we’re extremely close at times, but Justin Wong dominated with the pressure of a super offensive Rufus. Often finishing off opponents with his arms shooting up in the air on cue with the finishing hit of Rufus’s Ultra. The crowd loved it, and raised their hands to the roof as well.

Yoshinori Ono
(Street Fighter IV Producer Yoshinori Ono greets an amazingly enthusiastic crowd)

Immediately following the SFIV National Tournament was a shot at the International title. Battling it out round robin style, were Korea’s top player Poongko (Ryu), Japan’s top players Iyo (Dhalsim) and Daigo (Ryu), and Justin Wong (Rufus).

Iyo
(Japan’s top player Iyo zoning opponents with Dhalsim’s long limbs)

After a series of very intense and exciting rounds (I’m talking crazya** ish like Focus Cancels to EX to another EX to Ultra finish combos without even flinching), Daigo and Justin remained on top. The two would battle it out in a much anticipated match.

Poongko
(A disappointed Poongko after losing to Iyo, Daigo and Justin. )

Would Justin get redemption from the millions of people who have seen him get beat down by Daigo’s infamous Ken comeback on YouTube? Would the Rufus that he used to defeat all the best players in the U.S.A. be enough?

Daigo and Justin Wong
(Daigo and Justin Wong preparing for battle)

Not this time. Daigo’s godlike Street Fighter skills completely shut down Justin’s offensive strategy.

Seth Killian did his absolute best to commentate during this final match, but Daigo’s attacks and counters were happening so fast, that even he couldn’t keep up with the craziness.

Final score 4-0. Best Street Fighter IV Player in the World — Daigo, better known as “The Beast.” He can rest easy and enjoy his victory for a few months, until he must defend his title at the Evo 2009 Championships in July at Las Vegas.

Korea National Street Fighter IV Finals

As anyone who plays SFIV knows, Balrog is an extremely tough match up for Ryu, but that that didn’t stop Poonko from taking the first place title at the 2009 Korea National Street Fighter IV tournament. He used a flurry of focus attacks to close the gap on Balrog’s reach advantage, and whenever possible, EX canceled into an Ultra Combo.

Is Daigo Umehara the Best Street Fighter IV Player?

Arcadia magazine organized a mini tournament with Japan’s top Street Fighter IV (SFIV) players and pitted them one by one against Daigo Umehara. Better known to most as the “Beast” or simple “Daigo,” he’s Capcom’s player of the decade, and few if any can survive against his flurry of combos, perfect zoning, and godlike timing.

Can anyone in Japan beat the Beast? Watch the videos below and see for yourself.

Round 1 Win at GameStop’s Street Fighter IV National Tournament

GameStop Street Fighter IV Tournament

This past Saturday (February 21, 2009), GameStop and Capcom held the first official Street Fighter IV National Tournament in the U.S. With over 2,400 GameStop locations around the country, it’s the largest Street Fighter IV tournament to date, and possibly the largest Street Fighter tournament ever.

Street Fighter IV National Tournament Details

Round 1 store winners will advance to a series of Round 2 District Tournaments on Feb. 28; winners of these competitions will advance to the Round 3 Regional Finals, which will take place on March 14. The top 16 Regional finalists will advance to the championship event, to be held on April 18 in San Francisco. Finalists will battle the competition in a series of matches on Street Fighter IV until one player is left standing. The Grand Prize winner will receive an authentic Japanese-style Street Fighter arcade machine. All 16 finalists will receive MadCatz official Street Fighter IV FightPads and FightSticks, and will qualify for the quarter finals stage of the EVO Championship Series world finals, the premiere fighting championship series for video gamers being held July 17-19 in Las Vegas.

(Street Fighter IV wristband and headband – Round 1 Prizes)

I showed up at the San Mateo GameStop store in Hillsdale Mall and gave my shot at earning a ticket into Round 2. The place was packed. I hadn’t been to a tournament in years, and forgot how fun it was to compete. The excitement and adrenaline of near losses really gets the heart pumping!

The favorite of choice was definitely Sagat, and it’s not surprising since he’s considered the top character in the game. I went with Ryu instead of Chun Li because I found out you’re not allowed to switch characters during the tournament. Bogus rule I think, since character choice really depends on who you’re playing against.

The only other complaint I have is the fact that we’re stuck using Xbox 360 pads on default button settings. With barely any practice time in default mode, I ended up hitting kick a lot when I needed a punch to come out. Also, as I’m sure you know, it’s extremely difficult to pull off Super/Ultra combos and EX dash cancels on a pad.

GameStop Street Fighter IV Tournament

With all that said, I made it to the finals and earned my way into the Round 2 regional tournament in San Jose, CA. I don’t expect to win there, considering the amount of extremely talented Street Fighter players in the Bay Area. Half the people that show up at San Jose will probably be past EVO competitors, and one of them will most likely win the entire tournament.

Big thumbs up to GameStop and Capcom for doing such a great job in reviving the old Street Fighter scene.

Hadouken!!!
