The Departed directed by Martin Scorsese releases today in theatres. Starring three of Hollywood’s biggest stars – Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon and Jack Nicholson, it’s set to be the blockbuster of the season. The Departed is based off Infernal Affairs (Mou gaan dou), what many hail as the best Hong Kong cop movie of all time.

Infernal Affairs starred Cannes best actor winner Tony Leung Chiu-wai and Hong Kong heartthrob Andy Lau, is about a police officer who goes undercover in a Hong Kong gang and a local gangster who infiltrates the police. Infernal Affairs received six awards at the 2002 Hong Kong Film Awards, beating out Jet Li’s Hero for Best Film.

Is this going to be another remake that Hollywood screws up? Why didn’t they just bring this masterpiece to the U.S. in it’s original form? There’s an article on MSNBC about Jack Nicholson avoiding Infernal Affairs so that he could concentrate on Scorsese’s version. Glad to see he’s trying to add some originality to the movie.

Here are the trailers for the two movies :

Can Scorsese’s remake of Infernal Affairs live up to original? Watch it this weekend and let me know your thoughts!
