Yesterday, was Ultraman’s 40th birthday, the uber Japanese hero! I used to watch Ultraman as a kid every saturday morning as he defeated giant monsters and aliens. There was never a shortage of ray guns and ships to protect Earth from the bad monsters and aliens. Of course those never did any damage and always required, Science Patrolman, Hayata to become Ultraman and save the day!

Being an alien he had unlimited powers and being on a Japanese monster show he was a giant. When UltraMan first came to Earth chasing a monster through space he accidentally killed Hayata. Feeling remorse the giant silver and red UltraMan merged his life-force with Hayata and gave him “the Beta Capsule”. Now in times of need, Hayata can use the Beta Capsule (it looks like a big fat pen) and become UltraMan.

There’s been many variations of Ultraman since the days of my youth. Too many to keep up! The latest being Ultraman Max which premiered in 2005. It premiered on July 2nd on the CBC Network in Japan. CBC is related to TBS who broadcast most of the Ultraman shows in the 60’s and 70’s and to MBC who broadcast the Ultraman programs from 1996’s Ultraman Tiga through 2001’s Ultraman Cosmos.

Happy Birthday and long live Ultraman!
