The Departed directed by Martin Scorsese releases today in theatres. Starring three of Hollywood’s biggest stars - Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon and Jack Nicholson, it’s set to be the blockbuster of the season. The Departed is based off Infernal Affairs (Mou gaan dou), what many hail as the best Hong Kong cop movie of all time.
Infernal Affairs starred Cannes best actor winner Tony Leung Chiu-wai and Hong Kong heartthrob Andy Lau, is about a police officer who goes undercover in a Hong Kong gang and a local gangster who infiltrates the police. Infernal Affairs received six awards at the 2002 Hong Kong Film Awards, beating out Jet Li’s Hero for Best Film.
Is this going to be another remake that Hollywood screws up? Why didn’t they just bring this masterpiece to the U.S. in it’s original form? There’s an article on MSNBC about Jack Nicholson avoiding Infernal Affairs so that he could concentrate on Scorsese’s version. Glad to see he’s trying to add some originality to the movie.
Here are the trailers for the two movies :

Can Scorsese’s remake of Infernal Affairs live up to original? Watch it this weekend and let me know your thoughts!

I’ll check it out even though it’s a remake. I think the biggest reason Hollywood doesn’t import it over is because Asian actors don’t sell well.
It all comes down to $$$ and these Hollywood names are going to bring that in.

Now a days, Hollywood is really going into Asian movie adaptations. - See how this movie does on the American market.

- I wonder if the actual Internal Affairs get credit for this movie.

I’m actually quite happy they made a remake of this movie, otherwise I would’ve never even known about it. In fact, I still wouldn’t have known until you pointed it out that it was a remake.
I had planned to see this movie already, but now I’ll rent the original and watch it with subtitles since I don’t understand Chinese. I’ll try to give a fair comparison.

Yea the original Infernal Affairs 1 & 2 were great. Haven’t gotten a chance to see the third one.

I heard they won’t remake the next 2 in the trilogy. But chances are if this ones a hit the next 2 should be a guarentee.

i loved the original. but i’m skeptical about the hollywood remake. they’re filmming the remake of “my sassy girl,” but the plot has been butchered to hell…..

i just saw the movie. i haven’t seen infernal affairs yet, so i cannot make any comparison. but from the ending, i don’t see how a trilogy is possible. so as not to spoil your viewing pleasure, let me just say that there are no winners in the end. just “rats”…
but in fairness, it was a good movie in terms of plot development. you become involved (since you know what’s going on and who’s who; hence, you can sense the impending disaster). the actors can really carry their roles! and they are big stars too (like alec baldwin and martin sheen). a must see.

Infernal Affairs was really great. Not sure I want to see The Departed just because I really don’t like DiCaprio.

i was watching DiCaprio in Romeo and Juliet the other day… horrible to say the least. it just makes me more disinclined to see this remake

I have the Infernal Affairs part 1 sold in America. It’s not translated on voiceovers or anything, and just has English subtitles.

The ending of The Departed sux. I hate it, the whole movie. Might as well watch Star Wars instead.
