Zacuto Z-Finder for Your Video DSLR

Zacuto Z-Finder

I recently picked up a Canon 5D Mark II strictly for video purposes (don’t worry Nikon fans, there’s no way I’m giving up my D700 for still photography). One of the must haves that I found out very quickly is a LCD enhancer made by Zacuto called the Z-Finder ($395). The Z-Finder allows DSLR cameras to have the correct form factor for video, while also offering 3x focusable LCD magnification. It helps tremendously when manually focusing videos, and something I definitely recommend getting.

Why not just buy a real video camcorder? I still don’t get the fuss over video in camera???

With a camcorder, (if im correct here) you don’t get as much depth of field control, whereas the Dslr videos allow you to control focus and bokeh.

The big fuss is that DSLRs (especially the 5DMK2) have much MUCH larger sensors than conventional camcorders. You’d have to pay roughly $50k+ for a similar setup that could even come remotely close to the HD quality a ~$3k DSLR could achieve. Couple that with nice prime lenses for amazing DOF and you have one heavenly setup for cinematography.
